I make promos for Hyland Auto Sales' sponsorship of NRQ's "Make a Band".
One of the cool things about being a freelancer is all the cool projects you get to work on. For the last four years, I’ve been the social media manager and website designer / general media guy for a local used-car dealership called Hyland Auto Sales. They’re the best place to go to get a car with bad or no credit for just $500 down. Ha - that sounded like a commercial.
Recently, the owner, David “Red” Hyland, asked me to be part of a new ad campaign to promote Hyland alongside of NRQ’s “Make a Band” contest. I met with the Account Manager and we discussed ideas and eventually came to an idea where we’d make a weekly ad called “Red’s Hot Ride of the Week”.
With all the elements needed, I went to work designing the series of ads. Before making the different sizes, I chose to start with the 300x300 ad and get their feedback from my initial design. This way, I wasn’t wasting my time getting attached to something they’d end up hating.
After some notes and changes inside of Photoshop, Red and the Account Manager Jennifer Davis had me produce this ad below.
This was a very difficult ad to keep compositionally sound due to all the text and requirements, and while in my opinion, it’s not perfect, I think it will serve its purpose just fine.
The next thing I was asked to do is to create a weekly video sizzle featuring each car. I grabbed my Sony A7s II and together with audio tech Jeffery, we shot the intro and outro for each car.
In the edit, I used the photos already taken by Red’s sales staff to use as b-roll over the car’s features, and spiced it all up with some slick American flag graphics and flames to match the earlier ad campaign.
This is stuff that I love doing. And when you send it off to the client and they have this response:
It makes anything that was frustrating or difficult about the project all worth it.
